We’re happy to welcome Amber Sobery to Berea Academy this year.

Amber has a Deaf Education degree from Fontbonne University. She is also a Missouri Certified Sign Language Interpreter. Amber has worked for the Missouri First Steps Program and Families First through the Missouri School for the Deaf for 16 years. She taught ASL last year as part of an Intro to Sign Language class to high school students and is excited to teach high schoolers again.

Her family includes her husband of 20 years, Doug, and their daughter, Lillian (5th grade). They also have Kirby and Tango who are Papillon dogs.

Amber has been active in her church for 19 years and enjoys helping with the children’s ministry and interpreting.

ASL classes at Berea Academy – Wednesdays

This year-long, high school course in American Sign Language (ASL) introduces students to the language and culture of Deaf people in the United States and Canada. This course will focus on expressive and receptive language skills, conversational communication, and will include Deaf culture, community, literature, and history. Additionally, we will have group and individual projects throughout the year that will be presented in class and used in chapel services. This is a good class for those who are interested in studying sign language as a foreign language or want to be involved in ministry to the deaf in their church or community.

American Sign Language 2 continues students in the exploration of the language and culture of Deaf people. This class is based on ASL University’s ASL 2 with supplemental lessons and materials. Students will learn new vocabulary, increase knowledge and use of grammar and syntax, convert ASL to English and English to ASL, use Classifiers, and explain Christmas and Easter in ASL. Competition of ASL 1 or permission of the instructor is required for this class.
