Amber Sobery

Amber Sobery
American Sign Language I & II
World Language Department

Ms. Amber brings language to life in the classroom—not just through vocabulary and grammar, but by weaving in Deaf culture, literature, history, and the arts. Her teaching style is rooted in Comprehensible Input, a method that immerses students in the language through meaningful, hands-on communication. Her classroom is a relaxed and welcoming space where students are encouraged to engage, sign, and connect without pressure. Assignments are graded on completion, making it a low-stress environment that emphasizes participation and growth.

A Missouri-certified Teacher of the Deaf and ASL Interpreter, Ms. Amber holds a Bachelor of Arts in Deaf Education from Fontbonne University. Since 2003, she has taught families of deaf and hard-of-hearing children (birth to age 8) through Missouri’s First Steps and Families First Early Intervention programs. She began teaching high school homeschoolers in 2019—initially as a 10-week substitute—and never looked back.

Married for over 25 years, Ms. Amber is mom to a teenage daughter and two lively Papillon dogs. She enjoys gardening, reading, and traveling—and cherishes the deep sense of community at Berea, where connections between students, staff, and families are built to last.
