Physical Education is, very simply, the instruction in the care and development of the human self. Students of all ages are learning how to care for themselves. In P.E. with Ms. Jess, students will continue to explore movement, nutrition, and more. More traditional P.E. programs focus on teaching the rules of common games. Ms. Jess’ approach is more broad. Students will work on basic physical needs, such as safely stretching before exercise and calisthenics. Students with established skills will also have the opportunity to lead “focus days” with Ms. Jess’ help. Focus days could be spent learning how to properly kick and target a soccer ball, pass and shoot a basketball, or even the “best” technique for mastering the hula hoop. Mixed into the schedule will be “old school gym games” such as kickball and 4 Square. With Ms. Jess’ guidance, students will also prepare an activity/station for a ‘relaxed’ Field Day in May, 2025.
P.E. is open to all students at Berea. A mixed age group is a wonderful way for students to learn from each other. At Berea, we see this mixed group function well during our daily recess period.
For students in class from 12:30 pm – 2:00 pm, they are required to sign up for a ‘study hall’ from 2:00 pm – 2:30 pm on Thursdays. These thirty minutes will be focused on preparing for P.E. Students may have a snack, some water, change clothes, or relax after their academic day. The 2:00 pm – 2:30 pm ‘study hall’ is optional for students only attending P.E.
Physical Education enrollment is not a direct ‘first come, first served’ course. Students enrolled in Thursday classes will be given priority enrollment until June 31, 2024.
Students will be invited to plan, set up, and manage a station at Field Day, which will be held on May 15, 2025, at 2:15 pm in lieu of class.
Syllabus available in August, 2024
Physical Education is a Special Session that can be taken by students in Wonder and Explore, Level Up, Core Concepts, Junior High, or High School programs.
