Instructor Philosophy Statement
“Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly. (James 3:1)
This promise of positive results if we love well, and this warning of the power teachers wield through their words frame the guiding principles of our educational approach at Berea Academy.
First and foremost, our primary goal is to love well. How do we do that?
- Have the love of God in our own hearts. A personal relationship with Jesus Christ is essential.
- “For God so loved the world,that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
- “God loves you just the way you are, but He refuses to leave you that way. He wants you to be just like Jesus.” ~ Max Lucado
- Consider your position as a instructor as service; Berea Academy is an educational assistance program, but it is also a ministry. Commit yourself to pray for your students and their families.
- “For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.” (Galatians 5:13)
- Be patient with parents, students and staff. We are all going to have bad days, make mistakes and mess up. Address issues head on and forgive quickly.
- “with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” (Ephesians 4:2-3)
- Love sacrificially. This means sometimes the loving response will not be “fair” or to your benefit.
- “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full. “This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. These things I command you, so that you will love one another.” (John 15:9-17)
- Find common ground with those around you, seeking to come together over what we share in common rather than tear apart fellowship over differences of opinion.
- “complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind.” (Philippians 2:2)

- Love is a decision and an attitude. You demonstrate love in words, but your actions speak louder.
- “Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth.” (1 John 3:18)
- Reach out to those who are “unlovable” with compassion, tenderness and understanding.
- “but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.” (Romans 5:8)
