Purposeful Design has created a science program that is thorough, accessible, and rigorous. The textbook is colorful, balancing reading and graphic organizers to help students understand the concepts. The key to the program is the student workbook, encouraging students to a deeper understanding of the material.

The program is designed to be mastered in a single year. The pace required to complete the text in one academic year is brisk and limits the student’s ability to truly master the material. After careful consideration, Berea is implementing Purposeful Design Level 5 over two years.

In 2024/2025, students will complete units 1 and 2, for a total of 8 chapters.

  • Unit 1: Life Science: Cycles
    • Chapter 1: Natural Cycles
    • Chapter 2: Life cycles
    • Chapter 3: Cells
    • Chapter 4: Ecological Settings
  • Unit 2: Physical Science: Transformations
    • Chapter 5: Measuring Matter
    • Chapter 6: Changing Matter
    • Chapter 7: Force and Work
    • Chapter 8: Electricity and Magnetism

In 2025/2026, students will complete Units 2 and 3, for a total of 6 additional chapters.

Ms. Hannah’s focus is on mastery and understanding. To enhance student experience, class includes a significant number of activities, experiments, and projects. Students will be required to read the textbook, work with new vocabulary, and answer comprehension questions in homework. Additionally, students will have age appropriate tests and quizzes in class.

Ms. Hannah is also planning a Science Fair in early 2025. Student involvement is not required, though it is encouraged and supported. The final date for the Science Fair will be announced in September, 2024.
