Engineering is key to the many inventions and scientific advancements by Leonardo da Vinci. A Renaissance artist, da Vinci conceived ideas far ahead of his own time, inventing the concepts for the parachute, the helicopter, submarines, and more. Perhaps most well known for his works of art, da Vinci’s advancements in engineering are more relatable for many modern students.

A study of da Vinci’s engineering requires three tracks of study. One, students will study the basics of engineering, such as levers, pulleys, gears, and movement. da Vinci’s rotary movement, using cogs to convert energy from pedals or cranks, is a key component of many machines today. Two, students will study the interplay of da Vinci’s engineering models with his art, considering perspective, systems, and connections. Third, students will use their studies to create a da Vinci inspired machine, which they will model from craft materials. The multi-aspect of this course provides students with the knowledge and skills to do more than just recreate da Vinci’s machines – they can reengineer, invent something new, or create solutions for modern problems.

Ms. Nikki’s “Older Students” art classes are available for grades 6th – 12th. Art class is a unique opportunity to explore the same ideas with students of different ages and skills. Classes have two components: a teaching session followed by a working session. During the work session, students often chat with one another or listen to the music Ms. Nikki has selected for the day. Ms. Nikki is sensitive to the needs of a mixed age range and manages the class with respect for all present

Syllabus available in August, 2023
