Shurley English breaks down the structure of language into consistent, formulated techniques. Sentence diagramming, vocabulary builders, and writing are all included in the Shurley program. Sentence Diagramming is simplified through sensible labels and the use of underlining, parenthesis, and slash marks.
All Shurley English levels begin with identifying a noun and a verb. Students in Level 5 quickly add major parts of speech. Students practice identification through jingles and an ask/answer script. The pieces of the program come together to give students reflex like skill when reading/writing a sentence.
In writing, students start with building good sentences, then move to building 5 sentence paragraphs. Eventually, the students will build a 5 paragraph essay. The writing assignments build from the basics and follow a formula. The goal is to provide students with the basic writing skills they need while avoiding the anxiety and stress of writing.
Students will have homework throughout the week, including working with practice sentences, vocabulary, and writing assignments. For Core Concepts, students will diagram sentences and practice vocabulary by hand. Based on parent direction, they may type or handwrite the majority of their writing assignments. At least one writing assignment per semester will require typing. Class will also include age appropriate quizzes.
Syllabus available in August, 2024.
Grammar is part of the Core Concepts program, paired with Literature.
