Literature Study Units

Students will navigate these texts through a program called Reed Novel Studies. You can view samples and titles lists at the site: Reed Novel Studies. Be sure to select “Novel Studies” at the top. Currently, the novel study for Island of the Blue Dolphins is available for free download. This can provide you with an understanding of the program.

Reed Novel Studies offers a discount for bulk purchases. Berea Academy is organizing a bulk purchase of the novel studies for our selection. You will be contacted with more information after your student’s enrollment is finalized. The full price cost of the digital format is $10, the print is $12.

Core Concepts Literature is focused on exploring fiction through theme, characterization, setting, and more. Each book is rich with the elements required for good reading and study. The book selections journey around the world, introduce different viewpoints, and even go through a wardrobe to Narnia. The unifying theme for the year is individual responsibility. Each text studies the concept in a different way, considering one individual in light of another or change/growth within a single character.

Students will explore literature through a wide variety of means. Comprehension questions are only the beginning! Students will also work through class activities, presentations, diorama, and possibly short reenactments or re-writing of key book scenes. Age appropriate quizzes and exams will be given throughout the year.

For 2024/2025, students will have separate practice/instruction on grammar. The grammar of the Reed Novel Studies, will be used as a supplement/reinforcement of the Shurley English grammar program. Writing assignments will be included in literature homework, assigned in careful cooperation with grammar to avoid overwhelming students.

Syllabus available in August, 2024.

Literature is part of the Core Concepts program, paired with Grammar.
