A Simple Machine is a mechanical device that changes the direction or magnitude of a force. Renaissance scientists created six major categories for simple machines:
- Lever
- Wheel and Axle
- Pulley
- Inclined Plane
- Wedge
- Screw
While these devices are elementary, they are the building blocks of all compound machines. These six classical categories are overflowing with variety and sophistication.
Students will learn the properties of the six classical categories, their most primitive uses, and study ways the simple machine has become more elegant over time. In this course, the best understanding comes through learning through building. Once the students have studied a simple machine, they will be issued assignments to incorporate the machine into achieving a task.
Students may also study key figures in the history of simple machines, such as Archimedes, Simon Stevin, and Galileo. Some assignments may be specific to these individuals.
Simple Machines is a science course based in engineering. In addition to the model building in class, students will have a small amount of homework. Students may also experience age appropriate quizzes in class. However, the majority of the course is designed for learning/model building during the class period.
Students enrolled in Simple Machines will regularly have access to certain tools, such as: hot glue guns/glue, scissors, clamps, and other items to assist in model building. Donations of these items are always welcome. In September, parents will receive a permission waiver outlining the basic tools and expectations used in/for the class.
Syllabus Available in August, 2024
