America’s Story, Vol 1, by Angela O’Dell is a conversational, highly-readable text that brings to life the story of our country. The student text is rich with illustrations, maps, cultural connections, and narratives of the people and places pivotal to America’s development. Volume 1 is a full year curriculum, starting with a brief discussion of Ancient Americans and up to the Great Gold Rush.
The Teacher Guide is a required purchase. It contains the student worksheets for the program. Ms. Krista will collect the teacher guides on the first week of class. She will organize the worksheets into the student’s binder as the year progresses. In this way, the student is presented with the necessary work for the next lesson or two and doesn’t suffer discouragement due to the size of the book.
Though Core Concepts students have an educational journey ahead, the class utilizes an age appropriate introduction to the “six Historical Thinking Skills as established by the Advanced Placement (AP) Program”: The AP program is a set of criteria for high school aged students to master material. The six Historical Thinking Skills are:
- Identify and explain historical developments and processes.
- Analyze surrounding and situation of primary and secondary sources.
- Analyze arguments in primary and secondary sources.
- Analyze the contexts of historical events, developments, or processes.
- Using historical reasoning, analyze patterns and connections between and among historical developments and processes.
- Develop an argument.
Students will also develop a timeline for Volume 1. The timeline is a project throughout the year. Completed timelines will be on display at our Spring Showcase on May 9, 2025.
