Introduction to Spanish is a year long program with multi-media access and content. Mrs. Mertz will guide the students through parts of speech, formal commands, and tense usage in Spanish. The curriculum includes an online access code which provides a digital copy of the text, vocabulary flashcards, and interactive activities. Breaking the Spanish Barrier is well suited for Berea’s once a week format. The online component will allow students to continue to hear and master pronunciation throughout the week.
Breaking the Spanish Barrier uses a conversational approach to learning Spanish. A conversational approach presents material in relationship with other, similar items. Though the conversational approach is often more successful for students, it can lack some basic building blocks, such as the alphabet. Mrs. Mertz brings her Spanish education to the classroom, balancing the information necessary for classic learning with the success of conversational learning.
The classwork requires students to work at least 3 days a week at home to be successful. The course includes quizzes, tests, and writing assignments.
NOTE: This is a high school level course. The material and pace are targeting 9th-12th grade students. A well supported and interested 8th grade student can be successful as well.
Introduction to Spanish is part of High School programming.
