Mathematics can often seem daunting, but at Berea Academy, math is an enjoyable and enriching experience for both students and parents. Berea’s unique schedule brings elementary students together with instructors once a week for hands-on explorations that lead to a deep and satisfying understanding of math.
Throughout the academic year, students should continue their individual math curriculum at home to practice standard grade-level concepts, such as place value, operations, and geometric concepts. Classes at Berea focus on fundamental number interactions, such as building, drawing, puzzling, and playing games that help students explore and represent mathematical concepts in exciting and creative ways.
The workshop format at Berea introduces concepts to the group, allows students to work in pairs to tackle activities, and encourages them to present and share their findings with their peers. This collaborative approach not only fosters a sense of community but also enhances students’ abilities to provide feedback and engage in collaborative assessment of ideas. Closing activities tie these explorations to grade-level skills and processes that will be practiced in their weekly homework assignments. To guide student learning, Ms. Maggie uses Mindset Mathematics, a program that engages students in three key ways: visualization, play, and investigation.
Students do not need to purchase any textbooks. Copies of the illustrations from the book, worksheets, and activities related to the current big idea will be covered by the copy fee listed above.
Though this is a supplemental program, it is quite thorough. To ensure students’ mastery and retention, additional worksheets and activities are assigned as homework.
