People and Places are the ‘what and where’ of our experiences. Students will explore key figures in history. The final list of “who” is being compiled in July, 2024. Figures may include Johnny Appleseed and Wangari Maathai, Sts. Patrick and Valentine, Hellen Keller, Theodore Roosevelt, and George Washington Carver.

To understand geography, students need to start at the beginning. The “geography circle” centers at the student’s home and grows outward to encompass neighborhood, city, state, country, continent, and world. In the process, students learn age appropriate mapping skills. Students may also build a map of a favorite place, like a neighborhood park, or the Southgate building!

Students will explore these people and places each week and these courses are designed to work with each other. Based on the lesson plan, “Heroes” may start off the session one day, while “Mapping” may go first the next.

History and Mapping is also influenced by the reading selections for Literature:  Little House in the Big Woods, A Treasury of Beatrix Potter, and European fairy tales.
