Parks and Recreation is a hands-on design and build class. Students may use pencil and paper drawings, scissors, glue, rubber cement, hot glue, paints, stains, and other materials commonly used for crafting.
In the first semester, students learn/observe aspects of a “great” park for the whole family. They may identify a splash pad, walking trails, playground equipment, restrooms, etc. Students can do research outside of the classroom, as well as at the Southgate building. After identifying important parts that make a park “great”, students build a model of that destination.
In the second semester, the same observation, learning, and identification is turned towards a classic zoo. What makes it a great place to visit? What animals do they want to see? Students choose an animal to represent in a habitat. Once assembled, the different habitats will form a zoo for the whole family to enjoy.
The park model and the zoo model are on display during the Spring Showcase on May 9, 2025.
Students may use pencil and paper drawings, scissors, glue, rubber cement, hot glue, paints, stains, and other materials commonly used for crafting. Berea encourages students to wear clothing that can get messy!
