Trading cards! “Modern” trading cards first appeared in the 1860s featuring baseball figures. Cards have grown to cover many different topics, from famous athletes to everyone’s favorite: Pokémon. Board Games have a much longer history. Consisting of pieces and a playing board, board games can range from simple, quick play to complex strategy long play games. Trading Cards and Board Games rely heavily on art and rules.

Ms. Jess is ready to explore the world of ‘cards and games’. Students will learn, coach each other, and share the rules of popular games. Ms. Jess will help them identify the artistic needs of cards and games, assist in design for original work, and provide the guidance for creating a personal card/board game.

Based on class interest, the students may showcase their personal collections of cards/board games. With parent permission, a period of class may be spent trading commercial cards. Students will participate by playing iconic board games, as well.

Art of the Trading Card [and Basic Board Games] is a balance of social gameplay, original design, and artistic technique.

For students in class from 12:30 pm – 2:00 pm, they are required to sign up for a “study hall” from 2:00 pm – 2:30 pm on Wednesday. These thirty minutes will be focused on preparing for art. Students may have a snack, some water, or relax after their academic day. The 2:00 pm – 2:30 pm ‘study hall’ is optional for students only attending art.

Art of the Trading Card [and Basic Board Games] enrollment is not a direct ‘first come, first served’ course. Students enrolled in Wednesday classes will be given priority enrollment until June 31, 2024.

Completed art, games, or other aspects of the course will be on display at the Spring Showcase, on May 9, 2025.

Syllabus available in August, 2024
