After several months of careful review, Berea Academy has selected a new approach to Literature for our Core Concepts students. The class will blend together literature analysis with grammar studies. By merging these two fundamental language arts topics, students acquire writing skills and critical thinking more efficiently and successfully.

The year will include three major novels: The Westing Game, Esperanza Rising, and A Wrinkle in Time. These selections explore mystery, the human experience, coming of age, and fantastic worlds. Each novel has a different type of protagonist, setting, and language use. The variety ensures student engagement throughout the year.

Each Instructional Guide for Literature begins with a short author biography and a book summary. A pre-reading exercise gives students the opportunity to think about the theme outside the context of the story. Then, multiple assignments for each section of the book allow students to analyze the story elements in different ways. Some reading responses include drawing pictures or writing in the form of narrative, informative, or opinion. The close reading exercises have students reread a specific part of a chapter before answering questions so they can use textual evidence in their response. Graphic organizers are used throughout to keep the students engaged.

Throughout the year, students will acquire grammar using the straightforward format of Spectrum workbooks. This edition covers mechanics, usage, parts of speech, types of sentences, and more.

Due to book availability, shipping delays, and the class schedule it is recommended that books all be purchased for the start of class in September. Students may store the upcoming guides and novels on campus until needed. The final reading schedule for the novels will be available in August, 2023.
