This year-long, high school course in American Sign Language (ASL) introduces students to the language and culture of Deaf people in the United States and Canada.
This course will focus on receptive and expressive language skills along with Deaf culture, community, art, literature, and history. Students are required to attend and participate during class using a comprehensible input model that focuses on understanding first and signing as understanding grows. Students should expect 5-10 minutes of daily practice of vocabulary, fingerspelling and numbers, in addition to 60-90 minutes of assigned written homework and receptive language videos weekly that is best done in small sections throughout the week. In order to demonstrate ability in signing skills, students will be asked to record videos of themselves signing to submit to the instructor throughout the year for individual progress tracking. Internet access is required for the completion of weekly “At Home” assignments.
NOTE: This is a high school level course. The material and pace are targeting 9th-12th grade students. A well supported and interested 8th grade student can be successful as well.
American Sign Language 1 is part of the High School programming.
