The Gold Book – World Literature and its companion, A World Literature Anthology, are a complete curriculum for high school world literature language arts. Carefully selected poems, short stories, novels, and other writings from long ago and far away are included to represent as many different cultures as possible. Using A World Literature Anthology, students will read several works in their entirety as well as excerpts from many others. The Gold Book series is designed to encourage the high school student’s ability to interpret and access literary meaning in terms of content and philosophy and clearly state a position in response.

The book has 5 units:
Unit 1 – Early Literature
Unit 2 – Epic Poetry
Unit 3 – Medieval-Renaissance
Unit 4 – Enlightenment-Romanticism
Unit 5 – 20th Century

The publisher, Common Sense Press, has created a rigorous program for high school. Though Berea Academy has historically used Lightning Literature, the pace of Lightning Lit has forced instructors to forego activities or mastery to achieve the goals for the year. The rigor offered by Learning Language Arts through Literature will allow Ms. Mertz to adjust the pace during the year as needed and offer the students appropriate depth and breadth in the subject.

Ms. Mertz is also leading the course World History. The time periods and place studied in World History will complement the World Literature program. It is not necessary to take both classes. However, the students who choose both will benefit from the cross-curricular bridges between courses.

NOTE: This is a High School level course. The material and pace are targeting 9th-12th grade students. A well supported and interested 8th grade student can be successful as well.

World Literature is part of High School programming.
