English Lessons Through Literature (ELTL) is a complete language arts program for elementary and middle school students. For our Level Up! Students, we will be using Level ‘B, Blossoming.’

The biggest advantage in ELTL is that it provides a balance of literature interaction with grammar learning. The books in Blossoming are selections of age appropriate classics: The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, The Blue Fairy Book, Peter Pan, The Wind in the Willows, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Through the Looking Glass and What Alice Found There, and A Wonder-Book for Girls and Boys.  The curriculum also utilizes Aesop’s Fables. Throughout the literature experience, students learn the parts of speech, composition, and oral narration.

The program is well suited for Berea’s format because it is designed for three lessons per week. It is highly recommended that parents purchase the base book, English Lessons through Literature, B, Blossoming. It is not required, but it will make it significantly easier for parents to assist with homework. The workbook will be required, but each family needs to choose the correct format. The workbook is used for copywork, memorization, and descriptive writing. Copywork prompts can be in basic italic, cursive italic, manuscript, vertical cursive, or slant cursive. The books are identical, except in the writing format. To view the series: See Each of the Available Formats at Rainbow Resource

The edition for the course is the current revised edition of this curriculum. It is easy to identify the primary text because it is labeled as “Secular.” Berea Academy does not select curriculum solely on Christian or Secular presentation. The Secular edition of ELTL is the most available and effective version currently on the market.

To succeed in this course, the student must be able to do homework outside of class. At this age, most students need parent support to complete their work. Parents will not need to create lesson plans or teach the material.  However, this format is not a fully comprehensive course. Spelling and Reading Skills are not included.
