Let’s Design and Build is focused on instructing students on basic principles for building. During the first semester, students will focus on houses. They will explore the different ways people use houses, different locations houses are built, and the primary use/purpose of houses. Through this exploration, students will develop ideas and vocabulary to help them design the “perfect house” for themselves. Once students have designed their Perfect House, they will build a model of the structure.

During the second semester, students will expand their knowledge and tap their experiences. Each student will design and build a model of a common habitat found in a Zoo! Each habitat will need to flow into other sections, so that the class collaboration offers a complete Zoo. During the planning and designing phase, an optional field trip to the St. Louis Zoo may be scheduled.

Students may use pencil and paper drawings, scissors, glue, rubber cement, hot glue, paints, stains, and other materials commonly used for crafting. Berea encourages students to wear clothing that can get messy.

Let’s Design and Build is the Wednesday afternoon session of Level Up, paired with Math Fundamentals
