Biology I is a great introduction to high school-level science work, as well as preparation for college-level science courses.  It provides a foundation in the scientific method, and the basic vocabulary and concepts of biology. This course uses Apologia’s Exploring Creation with Biology. Topics covered include the lower kingdoms, biochemistry, cellular biology, genetics, a survey of the plant and animal phyla, and ecology. Lab work is included in almost every unit, which is called a module in the program. Labs are focused on becoming proficient in the use of a microscope, developing and conducting meaningful experiments, and dissection.

The 3rd edition contains a great deal of content depth.  Berea Academy’s primary goal is understanding and mastery of the material. To create success for the students, several of the units will be eliminated from the course plan. The final unit content will be available in July, 2024.

Ms. Harriss has training and experience to lead a differentiated classroom. Under her instruction, students can successfully complete this class at both the Junior High and 9th grade/high school level.

For students unable to complete live dissection, an alternate plan/activity will be provided. Advanced notice is required. The dissection schedule will be available with the course syllabus in August, 2024.

Note that this course is 120 minutes, shortening the lunch break to 25 minutes from 12:00 pm – 12:25 pm. A full 120 min class provides students with time to participate in lab work.

Another Berea instructor, Hannah Dierzbicki, is planning a Science Fair in early 2025. Student involvement is not required, though it is encouraged and supported. The final date for the Science Fair will be announced in September, 2024.

Biology 1 with Lab is part of Junior High and High School programming.
