American Sign Language 2 continues students’ exploration of the language and culture of Deaf people. This class is based on Lifeprint’s ASL University’s vocabulary curriculum with supplemental lessons and materials. Students will learn new vocabulary, increase knowledge and use of grammar and syntax, convert ASL to English and English to ASL, use Classifiers, and sign Christmas and Easter in ASL. This class will have additional focus on conversational fluency.

Students will have group and individual projects throughout the year that will be presented in class and possibly used in chapel. Additional assignments will incorporate Deaf history, literature and culture.

In order to demonstrate ability in signing skills, students will be asked to record videos of themselves signing to submit to the instructor for evaluation and feedback. Students should expect at least 15 minutes of daily practice of vocabulary, grammar, and fingerspelling, and weekly videos totaling 40-50 minutes in addition to weekly assigned homework. Internet access will be needed for the completion of many homework assignments and the required vocabulary videos. Students will be assessed each class period on expressive and receptive language and participation in group activities and discussions.

Competition of ASL 1 or permission of the instructor is required for this class.

American Sign Language 2 is part of High School Programming.
