Biology I is a great introduction to high school-level science work, as well as preparation for college-level science courses.  It provides a foundation in the scientific method, and the basic vocabulary and concepts of biology. This course uses Apologia’s “Exploring Creation with Biology.” Topics covered include the lower kingdoms, biochemistry, cellular biology, genetics, a survey of the plant and animal phyla, and ecology. Lab work is included in almost every unit, which is called a module in the program.  Labs are focused on becoming proficient in the use of a microscope, developing and conducting meaningful experiments, and dissection.

The 3rd edition listed above was first used at Berea Academy in the  2022/2023 school year, though previous editions have been used in the past. While working through the 3rd edition, it became clear that the depth of content in the book required a slower pace. In all classes, Berea Academy’s primary goal is understanding and mastery of the material. To create success for the students, a slower pace was implemented in January, 2022. It is likely the 2023/2024 school year will have a similar pace.

Biology 1 with Lab is part of High School programming.
